Panthers Eye Disability Access: Heat Arena Opponents Rally

About 35 representatives of Broward's disabled community met with consultant Kevin McGuire about the access plan for the Panther's new arena, according to Marilyn Marks of the MIAMI HERALD. McGuire, who is confined to a wheelchair, was hired by the arena's developer, Huizenga Holdings, to "oversee the arena's compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act." McGuire: "This arena will have more access than any arena in the country." Disability advocate John Garon applauded Panthers owner Wayne Huizenga "for involving disabled residents" early in the process. The plans drew criticism from Dominic Marinelli of the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association who saw insufficient access to ensure that all wheelchair-bound patrons can see full action (MIAMI HERALD, 8/29).

Stadium Notes

The Lightning and Ice Palace have retained Kevin McGuire, President of McGuire Associates, to provide counsel regarding compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) issues at the arena. The firm provides consulting in implementing ADA policies (Ice Palace). Arrangements for disabled patrons at the Ice Palace will feature special parking and concessions, braille menus at refreshment counters, workers trained in sign language, and "about" 365 seats at the Lightning games (TAMPA TRIBUNE, 9/27).
